What is Coordinate Battleship?

Coordinate plane battleship is the Battleship game played on a coordinate grid: you call out (x, y) ordered pairs to find and sink hidden ships before you run out of shots. It practices plotting points in the first quadrant and all four quadrants.

How to play coordinate battleship

  1. Enemy ships are hidden on the points of the coordinate plane, lying across or up and down.
  2. Tap a point to aim (or type its x and y), then tap again or press Fire.
  3. A hit explodes in orange; a miss splashes in blue. Hit every point of a ship to sink it.
  4. Sink the whole fleet before your shots run out to win.

Reading coordinates

  • An ordered pair is written (x, y). x is across, y is up.
  • Quadrant I: x and y both positive. II: x negative, y positive. III: both negative. IV: x positive, y negative.
  • The origin is (0, 0), where the axes cross.

Battleship strategy

  • Fire in a checkerboard pattern at first: every ship covers at least two points, so you won't miss any.
  • After a hit, try the four points around it to find which way the ship lies.
  • Ships never touch, so once one sinks, the points around it are empty.

Frequently asked questions

What is coordinate plane battleship?

It is the classic Battleship game played on a coordinate grid. Instead of letters and numbers, you call out (x, y) coordinates to find and sink hidden ships, which is a fun way to practice plotting points.

How do I read a coordinate like (3, −2)?

The first number is x: go across (right if positive, left if negative). The second number is y: go up if positive, down if negative. So (3, −2) is 3 right and 2 down from the origin.

Which level should I start with?

Start with Quadrant I, which only uses positive coordinates from 0 to 8. 4 Quadrants adds negative numbers, and Big Sea goes from −7 to 7.

Can I type coordinates instead of tapping?

Yes. Type the x and y values in the boxes under the grid and press Fire or Enter.

Is this good for teaching the coordinate plane?

Yes. Students must read and plot ordered pairs to play, and the game tells them which quadrant or axis each shot landed in.
